Our Rugby Munchkins classes take children on a fantastic journey from learning the most basic rugby skills to preparing them for the next stage of their sporting career. As well as learning and developing their rugby skills, we also aim to encourage development of social interaction to build confidence and well-being.
At every stage fun is the first and foremost element of every class. Through the use of music, we bring something different to our rugby classes that aren’t used elsewhere. All our Rugby Munchkins classes are totally non-contact and suitable for both boys and girls.
Our classes are split into three age groups: 2-3yr olds, 3-4yr olds and 4-7yr olds.

The youngest Football Munchkins class, where we encourage parent participation, introduces the children to the core movement skills of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed as well as the most basic football skills like ball striking and dribbling.

Our middle class is where we encourage our Munchkins to go it alone (although if they do still need parent help, that’s fine too!). During this class we will look to further develop all of the skills learnt in the first class; more ball striking, dribbling, stopping the ball and of course scoring lots of goals!

The Munchkins are now close to making the step up to club football and with this in mind, we look to develop their core skills even further. All the games we play are great fun, but all have specific football-relevant themes. We look to refine their skills, but also add some new skill sets into their class which they wouldn’t be getting elsewhere.

The youngest Rugby Munchkins class introduces the children to the most basic skills like holding the ball in two hands, and developing balance, co-ordination and agility. Teamwork and social skills are two of life’s key skills so we try to emphasise and practice this as much as possible through lots of fun team games using coloured rugby balls to promote safety and learning. We also offer fun pod like games such as scoring tries, kicking over the posts and using the tackle bags! We encourage parent participation for this age group.

The next stage in the Rugby Munchkins journey picks up from what they have already learnt and starts to concentrate on more rugby specific drills; side-stepping, touch rugby, and timed team events introducing healthy competition and fun. The children will predominantly be using colour coded mini rugby balls, so still developing hand-eye / colour co-ordination whilst starting to feel a bit more grown up. Parent participation at this level is encouraged, but by no means expected.

The Munchkins are now close to making the big step up to mini-rugby and with this in mind, we look to develop their core skills even further. All the games we play are great fun but all have specific rugby relevant themes. As some clubs now allow children of this age to play mini-rugby, we look to finesse their skills, but also add some new skill sets in to their class which they wouldn’t be getting elsewhere. We do at this level introduce tag rugby which is purely non-contact but excellent for them to identify space and opportunities as well as hone their communication skills. Parents are always welcome to interact but by now they can take their well-earned break with a coffee and the newspaper!
